Thinking back to when I was a kid, I often ate lousy foods. But on the rare occasions growing up when we did eat a home-cooked meal, I always enjoyed the rich, salty, veggie-packed goodness of chicken soup (not the Campbell’s crap). It was our family’s version of a multi-vitamin. Hydrating and nutritious, it always made me feel a bit better. I remember placing my face above the steam of the warm bowl and breathing it in to open my sinuses and enjoying the rich aroma of the stock after hours of gentle simmering on the stovetop.
So when sourcing ingredients at the grocery store for my own family’s dinner, I think to myself, will this still pack the same punch as my momma’s chicken soup?
Changes in the Food Chain
With depleted soil nutrients, industrialized farming practices, and the emergence of GMOs in the food chain, the food we eat every day, may have less nutritional value than either your parents or your grandparents had.
In a report from the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, they studied the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s nutritional data from both 1950 and 1999 for 43 different vegetables and fruits.
Think about it. The only thing a customer can know about a piece of produce bought from a supermarket is what they can see. So companies place a premium on produce that follows strict visual standards.
In this report, they found “reliable declines” in the amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin B2, and vitamin C over the past half-century. The declining nutritional contents in food can be chalked up to improved traits such as size, growth rate, pest resistance other than nutrition… all so that the product is larger, more uniform in shape, color, and texture, and is more marketable for consumers. It may look better but it certainly isn’t healthier!!!!!
So what can be done?
First, check your community for farmer’s markets and local produce & meats! Benefits of farmers markets include:
- Preserving rural local business, livelihoods, and farmland
- Keeping money in the local economy
- Increased access to fresh, nutritious food
- Supporting healthy communities
- Promoting sustainability
- Creating relationships between yourself and the farmer
- Enjoying a beautiful morning shopping. One of my most favorite activities is hitting the local farmers market every weekend with my family.
Second, look for organic options! Compared with conventionally grown produce, organically grown produce has lower detectable levels of pesticide residue. The word “organic” refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products, and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to meet the following goals:
- Enhance soil and water quality
- Reduce pollution
- Provide safe, healthy livestock habitats
- Enable natural livestock behavior
- Promote a self-sustaining cycle of resources on a farm
Organic really does make a difference!!! If you were at the farm watching them spray the pesticides with the skull and crossbones on the container there is NO WAY you would actually ever eat that food. Just because we don’t see it happening firsthand doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. So please, you are worth spending a little more and purchasing organic as often as you possibly can!!!!
